Practical hurdles remain. Engineers must balance platforms against storm surges and strong currents while protecting electrical and plumbing systems from constant saltwater exposure. Upfront costs still hover well above conventional builds, though firms like Oceanix are driving prices down through standardized, factory-produced modules. Ongoing work on self-adjusting mooring systems and corrosion-resistant coatings suggests these obstacles are temporary rather than permanent.
Looking forward, cities from Rotterdam to Singapore are testing floating offices, schools, and even dairy farms. The result is a new kind of waterfront that treats the sea as an extension of the city grid instead of its edge.
