In the high desert outside Taos, New Mexico, architect Michael Reynolds started stacking old tires with dirt in the 1970s, turning what most saw as waste into walls that could regulate temperature on their own. His goal was straightforward: homes that didn’t need power lines, city water, or monthly utility statements to function.

Those early experiments grew into what became known as Earthships—structures that sit partially underground and rely on simple physics for comfort. South-facing windows pull in sunlight, which warms the dense tire walls and concrete floors during the day. At night the stored heat keeps rooms comfortable even when temperatures drop. In hotter regions, the same earth-covered sides and roof overhangs block excess sun without mechanical cooling.

Water use follows a closed loop. Rain collects on the roof and feeds into cisterns, where basic filters make it safe for drinking and washing. Once used in sinks or showers, the water flows to indoor planters that grow vegetables and fruit trees. The remaining wastewater moves to a separate treatment area before returning to the soil. Electricity comes from rooftop solar panels and occasional wind turbines, sized to handle lights, appliances, and small pumps.

Costs vary with size and finish level. A modest owner-built version can come in around twenty thousand dollars, while larger, more finished homes reach one hundred fifty thousand. Many people join group builds to share labor and learn the techniques. The materials—tires, cans, and bottles—are usually free or cheap, which keeps expenses low once the design is set.

Living inside one changes daily habits. Natural finishes reduce exposure to common household chemicals, and the indoor gardens bring fresh produce within reach year-round. Yet the approach still faces hurdles. Building departments in some places hesitate to approve designs that skip standard framing and utility hookups. Ongoing care, such as monitoring tire walls for settling or keeping filters clean, requires regular attention that conventional houses rarely demand.

Reynolds now runs a training program that sends builders to projects around the world. The method keeps evolving, but the core idea remains the same: use what’s already on the ground, let the sun and rain do the heavy work, and end up with a place that costs little to operate. For anyone tired of rising energy prices and generic subdivisions, these homes offer a practical alternative built from the ground up.
