These panels arrive flat on trucks, then stand upright to create rooms that feel both solid and surprisingly light. Instead, a central volume two stories high holds the kitchen and a long table. The ramp, cut from the same cross-laminated stock as the walls, doubles as extra seating when the whole family gathers. Because the timber carries both gravity and lateral loads, few interior columns interrupt sightlines; a child running from one end of the house to the other remains visible from almost anywhere.
The material also shapes daily rhythms. Morning light enters through tall, narrow windows placed where the panels meet, casting striped patterns across the floor that shift with the seasons. In winter the wood stores heat from a single wood stove and releases it slowly through the night, reducing the need for separate heating zones. Acoustically, the panels absorb enough sound that conversations at the table do not carry sharply into private rooms, yet footsteps remain audible enough to signal presence without intrusion.
Similar projects appear in British Columbia and northern Sweden, where builders have adapted the same panels to colder climates by adding deeper reveals at windows and simple exterior screens of unfinished larch. In each case the construction sequence is nearly the same: foundations and services are prepared, then the walls and floors arrive numbered and are lifted into place within days. Once enclosed, the interior can be partitioned later with lighter stud walls or even fabric if living arrangements change. The heavy timber remains the constant frame, ready to accept new divisions as children grow or elders require closer care.
Such houses do not announce themselves as experiments. Their details—exposed edges where panels meet, small gaps left for seasonal movement, the quiet way doors close against the dense wood—belong to ordinary domestic life rather than demonstration projects.
